The family of Steve Irwin

The family of Steve Irwin has preserved over 90,000 animals

Over 90,000 animals have been saved by the Irwin family since the Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital opened.

In 2004, Steve Irwin and his wife, Terri, founded the Wildlife Hospital at the Australia Zoo. Steve tragically passed away two years later after being injured by a stingray while snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. Now, Terri and their two children, Robert and Bindi, continue to own and operate the 700-acre wildlife hospital, which employs more than 500 people. Each year, the center rescues, treats, and releases more than 7,000 native Australian species.

Bindi Irwin shared on Instagram, “Animals from all over Australia are admitted to the Wildlife Hospital.” She added, “This week, we treated our 90,000th patient.” The milestone patient was a platypus rescued from a wildfire. Robert Irwin also posted on Instagram, saying, “‘Ollie’ the orphaned platypus is receiving round-the-clock care until he can be released back into the wild.”

“The hospital has been offering 24/7 wildlife rehabilitation and an amazing animal rescue service for the past 16 years. We are incredibly proud of our world-class facility!” he added.
